Philips’ Philharmonic Choir

Originally founded in 1937, the Philips’ Philharmonisch Koor (PPK) is a mixed choir of around 70 well trained and enthusiastic singers. Originally exclusively for employees of Philips, the choir has long been open to everyone. Many members do have a connection with the company and Philips itself remains our main sponsor and we often perform on behalf of Philips’ top management in locations such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (shown below).

The majority of our members are Dutch but we also have a growing number of expats and singers from all over the world, many of which work with the many international businesses located in the Eindhoven region. Moreover, many of our guest conductors use English as their preferred language.

During 2017, we will be performing a number of concerts including Bach’s Matthew Passion in Veghel, Maastricht, Venlo and Eindhoven, as well as taking part in a major production of Mahler’s 8th Symphony, one of the largest-scale choral works in the classical concert repertoire, at various locations in the Netherlands.

Our conductor is Béni Csillag. Our accompanist is Mark van Platen (musician/composer, winner of the Gouden Kalf 2004).

Each year the choir performs 3-5 concerts, or series of concerts, together with a professional orchestra and soloists. Since 1948 the PPK has performed J. S. Bach’s Matthew Passion in Eindhoven together with the professional orchestra Philharmonie Zuidnederland (previously Het Brabants Orkest) in the Frits Philips Muziekgebouw:

In addition to our regular performances of the Matthew passion, the choir regularly performs in concert hall and churches throughout the Netherlands. Recent concerts have included performances in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Tivoli Vredenburg Utrecht, as well as concerts in Maastricht, Delft, Zwolle, Apeldoorn, Breda, Den Bosch, Sittard, Roermond, Veghel, Cuijk, Veldhoven, and of course Eindhoven.

A full list of all our recent concerts can be found here:

We rehearse every Tuesday at the Christiaan Huygens College, Rachmaninowlaan 2, 5653 AT, Eindhoven, ( from 1945 to 2215 hrs. Each rehearsal begins with some voice exercises and there is a break between 2100 and 2115 hrs when coffee and tea is available. Once a month the bar is open after the rehearsal for a drink. Three or four times a year we also have a study day. This is normally on a Saturday and is often followed by an informal social event or dinner.

Joining the Choir
If you would like to join the PPK, it is necessary to attend an audition to assess your voice and musicality. We can also offer advice and training if you are not quite at the required level, but show potential and a desire to sing and perform at a good level.

You will also be expected to invest time in home study and to regularly attend and fully participate in the rehearsals and concerts. Many of our members also attend regular private lessons at their own expense to maintain their skills.

The PPK also offers a training plan for singers aged 14 and over who wish to join but have not yet reached the level required by the PPK.

Full membership costs € 200 a year.

If you are interested in joining the PPK, would like more information, or would like to come and meet us and attend one of our rehearsals, please contact Trudy Bok, membership secretary through our contact form.
